Resistant toilet art? - When the silent place (dis)agrees.

Deutscher Kongress für Geographie Kiel 2019

Lilith Kuhn

In this lecture, I explored the role of loo art in the University Library of Freiburg.  Since Klokunst does not correspond to the original function of a toilet wall, this can be considered a performative practice. The resistance of Klokunst can be seen on the level of content as well as in its rebellion against being regularly painted over. The content and practices show power struggles between what is socially normed and accepted and what is marginalized. In the toilet, practices produce new spaces of communication and art. A space of (semi-)public debate and perhaps even a low-threshold form of civil disobedience emerges.
